I ended up coverting it to a BDL model with a hinged floor plate magazine. From 1978 to 1982, Remington offered the Sportsman 78 which is the same model 700 action but with cheaper features such as a plain stock without checkering. I have the 78 in a 308 version and replaced the stock a few years ago. This base is for shooting at longer distances. Action Hand Gun Weight Model Number Cartridge or Gauge Barrel Length Round Capacity Barrels Extras MetalCondition. The rail allows the user to decide where their scope will be mounted since there are numerous slots and it will accept Picatinny and most Weaver-style rings. Stock has typical bench handling marks/safe marks, certainly not perfect but not trash either. As others have said the Sportsman 78 was a cheaper version of the Model 700. The Talley Picatinny Base for Remington 700 (Long Action) is a one-piece Picatinny Base constructed of aluminum and includes mounting hardware. Its in nice shape (stock 90%, blu 95%), has sundry scope (Tasco 3-9x32 about same age as gun, in great shape and very clear, Tasco Japan I believe), end bell of scope has small dent in it (I didn't do it!). Trigger is very heavy (6+ lbs) lending itself to limit group performance. I ran some generic handloads through it, used a random mid pressure load with quality 55 gr HPBT's and it did 3/4 inch and better at times. I have fired about 100 rounds in testing after thorough cleaning and it does the typical 1 MOA with Walmart Rem FMJ's. This was made for a few years to compete with the Win 770, which was a similar no frills walnut stocked Model 70. 223 Rem bolt action rifle based on the 700 action, so you can do everything to it as if it's a 700 BDL, etc.
